From Delhi to Sydney: Nikhil Chaudhary’s Journey to Play for Australia

Nikhil Chaudhary’s cricketing path began in the streets of Delhi before winding its way to the pitches of Sydney. The 30‑year‑old right‑hander, born in India, now aspires to wear the green and gold of Australia in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

After representing Punjab in India’s List A and T20 tournaments, Chaudhary’s career took a turn when the COVID‑19 lockdown left him stranded in Australia. Rather than return home, he chose to settle permanently, seeking better opportunities in the country’s robust domestic structure.

He broke into the Australian scene with a T20 debut against Bangladesh in June and has since been named in the Australian A squad for an upcoming ODI series against India A. This series will be his first chance to prove he belongs at the highest level of limited‑overs cricket.

Speaking to the media, Chaudhary said, “I want to play 50‑over cricket, and if I get the chance, I’d love to try Test cricket. My immediate target is the 2027 World Cup, followed by the T20 World Cup next year. I am committed to representing Australia for as long as I can.”

He reiterated that his primary motivation is the love of the game, not national identity. “It doesn’t matter which country I play for; I just want to be on the field,” he explained, noting that many talented players never get the chance to represent their birthplace.

Chaudhary’s domestic credentials are strong: a prolific 393 runs from 13 Sheffield Shield innings, a debut unbeaten 76 for Tasmania, and a 163‑run stand against New South Wales. In the limited‑overs arena, he has contributed 26 runs in two matches for Australia A and taken two wickets.

With the Australia A vs India A series looming, Chaudhary sees a clear pathway to the full national side and, ultimately, to the coveted 2027 World Cup squad.
