Former Kiwi Captain Stephen Fleming Takes Charge of England's Test Team

London – On July 31, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming will become the head coach of England's Test side. The move follows a series of rapid changes within the England camp, including the retirement of all‑rounder Ben Stokes and the appointment of Jo Root as the new Test captain.

England’s quick‑bowling spearhead Ollie Robinson said he has never met Fleming in person but has heard numerous favourable accounts of his coaching philosophy. "It will be interesting to see what kind of tactics he'll bring and how the team reacts," Robinson told The I Paper, describing the appointment as a "new and exciting" chapter for English cricket.

Fleming steps into a role that now carries the heavy task of revitalising a side that recently slipped to a 2‑1 home series loss against New Zealand. The former Kiwi captain replaces Brendon McCullum, who was removed from the head‑coach position after the series.

Robinson reflected on the turbulence caused by Stokes’s surprise retirement, recalling a palpable sense of disbelief among teammates. He praised the periods under Stokes and McCullum, calling them "enjoyable and rewarding," and lamented their departure while remaining hopeful about the fresh direction.

Since his comeback at Lord's in June, where Robinson took seven wickets, a knee issue kept him out of the next two Tests. He is now undergoing a structured fitness regime devised with England’s medical staff and cricket director Rob Key, focusing on endurance work, cycling, and strength conditioning. "My goal is to be fully fit for the Pakistan series and earn selection," he affirmed.
