Getafe strengthens defence with free-agent Sazonov

On 4 August, Getafe CF confirmed the signing of Georgian centre-back Saba Sazonov. The 24-year-old joins the squad on a free transfer and signs a deal that runs through June 2027, with an optional extra year built into the contract.

Sazonov’s career began at Genk Saint-Petersburg, after which he featured for Dynamo Moscow and spent a season with Torino FC in Italy, appearing in 13 first-team games. A serious knee‑ligament injury has severely restricted his playing time, limiting him to only two minutes of senior football over the past two years.

Reports indicate that a move to Getafe was almost completed in the previous season, but a clerical error in the paperwork prevented the transfer from being finalised. The club has also reinforced its right side by acquiring 23‑year‑old Spaniard Andrés García on loan from Aston Villa. García, who recorded 18 appearances for the Premier League side after joining from Levante in January 2025, is set to replace Juan Iglesias, who left for Sevilla on a free transfer at the end of June.

Getafe missed out on a European qualification spot by a narrow margin and has seen several departures, including midfielder Luis Milla, forward Mauro Arambari, defender Domingos Duarte and full‑back Iglesias. Despite the roster turnover, head coach José Bordalás has renewed his contract for two more seasons, committing him to the club until June 2028 amid ongoing talks with president Ángel Torres.
