High‑Level Task Force Targets Sports Ecosystem Growth in Northeast

The Union Ministry of Development of the North‑East, led by Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, announced the formation of a High‑Level Task Force (HLTF) to accelerate sports development in the region. The task force will design a unified ecosystem that integrates infrastructure, coaching excellence, sports science, nutrition and athlete welfare.

Central to the strategy is the "one state, one sport" approach, which identifies each North‑Eastern state’s natural competitive edge and allocates specialised support. Weightlifting, archery and football have been earmarked as priority sports for several states.

Scindia emphasized that the initiative moves beyond bricks‑and‑mortar construction. It seeks to deliver world‑class training environments, scientific conditioning programmes and robust support services so that aspiring athletes can train at elite standards without leaving their home states.

Coach Vijay Sharma, who works with Mira Bai Chanu, welcomed the policy, asserting that it will nurture talent from the grassroots level and provide a clear pathway for athletes to reach international platforms. The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to invest in talent, coaching expertise and modern facilities, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a vibrant sports culture in the North‑East.
