How Adolf Hitler’s Offer Could Not Deter India’s Hockey Hero

Major Dhyan Chand’s name is synonymous with Indian hockey supremacy, yet a lesser‑known episode involves a direct overture from Adolf Hitler after the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Chand’s performance in Berlin was nothing short of spectacular. He struck three goals in a match that ended 8‑1 against the host nation, leading to an unprecedented defeat for Germany. The result so enraged the Nazi leadership that Hitler abandoned the stadium halfway through the game.

Impressed by Chand’s skill, Hitler reportedly invited the Indian star to play in Germany and even offered a senior military position. Chand, a proud Indian officer, rebuffed the proposition, choosing to remain loyal to his country and its armed forces.

He continued to represent India, securing gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936, and retired after a distinguished 34‑year service, having scored 400 career goals. Chand passed away on December 3, 1979, after a battle with cancer. Today, his birthday on August 29 is observed as National Sports Day, commemorating a sportsman who placed national pride above personal gain.
