India Aims for Record Medal Haul as Asian Games Kick Off in Japan

New Delhi, September 19 – The Asian Games 2026 commenced in Nagoya, Japan, with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Mizuhō Park Athletic Stadium. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Indian contingent, noting the exhaustive training and fierce commitment displayed by every athlete. Posting on X, Modi conveyed that the entire country feels a deep sense of pride and expects the team to perform at its peak, exhibit sportsmanship, and secure outstanding results.

The delegation’s entrance was led by Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker and kabaddi superstar Pawan Sehrawat. Hosted by the Olympic Council of Asia, the Games now involve 45 nations competing in 43 sports. Since its inaugural edition in New Delhi in 1951, the event has grown into a major continental competition, with the 2026 Games representing the 20th installment and Japan’s third time as host.

India’s performance at the 2023 Asian Games set a new standard with 107 medals, including 28 golds. The present squad is eager to improve on that achievement, especially as the country continues to dominate men’s and women’s cricket and kabaddi, while the men’s hockey team defends its title.
