India Registers Biggest T20 Margin Against Afghanistan, Clean Sweep Completes

September 17, New Delhi – India wrapped up a three‑match T20 series with a historic 127‑run victory over Afghanistan at Arun Jaitley Stadium, achieving a 3‑0 clean sweep. The margin stands as the largest T20 win India has ever recorded against the Afghan side and also represents Afghanistan’s heaviest defeat by runs in the format.

After electing to bat, India posted a formidable 221/7. The cornerstone of the total was a 142‑run opening partnership between Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, achieved in just under ten overs. Sharma’s explosive 108 off 30 balls included eleven sixes and nine fours, setting a new record for the fastest century by a full‑member nation player in T20 cricket.

Shreyas Iyer’s 29 runs and strategic short partnerships nudged the score past 200, while the lower order added valuable runs. Afghanistan’s most successful bowler, Ajmatullah Omarzai, managed two wickets; Rashed Khan and Abdullah Ahmadzai each took one.

Afghanistan’s chase fizzled quickly. The opening stand of 31 runs between captain Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz lasted only 3.1 overs before the pair fell. The side slumped to 94/4 after 14.1 overs, largely due to a decisive over from Nitesh Reddy that produced three wickets for a single run. Subsequent breakthroughs came from Ravi Bishnoi, Akshar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah and Yash Thakur, sealing the comprehensive defeat.

The series win adds to India’s recent dominant performances, including a 168‑run thrashing of New Zealand earlier this year, and reinforces its standing as a powerhouse in the shortest format.
