India’s Sporting Icons: Javelin Star Ajit Yadav and Cricket Pioneer Firuz Palia

When India looks to its sporting heroes, two names from different centuries often surface: Ajit Singh Yadav, a Paralympic javelin thrower, and Firuz Palia, an early Test cricketer.

Ajit was born on 5 September 1993 in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh. A 2017 railway accident stole his left hand while he tried to rescue his friend Anshuman Singh. Instead of surrendering, Yadav harnessed his resolve and embraced javelin. His breakthrough arrived at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, where a 65.62‑metre effort in the F46 division earned him silver. The athlete also collected bronze at the 2022 Asian Para Games, bronze at the 2024 World Championships, gold at the 2023 World Championships, and Grand Prix titles in Beijing (2019) and Dubai (2021). The nation celebrated his achievements with the Arjuna Award in 2025.

Firuz Palia entered the world on 5 September 1910 in Bombay. He played two Tests for India, both at Lord’s against England in 1932 and 1936, batting left‑handed and delivering spin. Though his international stint was short, his domestic résumé was impressive: representing Bengal, Madras, Bombay and Mysore, he compiled 4,536 runs and claimed 208 wickets over 100 first‑class matches.

Palia’s life concluded on 9 September 1981 in Bangalore at 71. Together, Yadav’s modern Paralympic success and Palia’s pioneering cricket contributions illuminate India’s diverse athletic heritage.
