The Indian selection committee is scheduled to convene on August 19 to finalize the squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. Uncertainty hangs over the participation of several prominent players. Despite impressive performances in the England series, Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj are reportedly unlikely to secure a spot in the squad. Shreyas Iyer’s position is also uncertain. The selectors face a decision between Iyer, Riyan Parag, Washington Sundar, and Rinku Singh. Mohammed Siraj, who was the highest wicket-taker in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, may miss out, with Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Prasidh Krishna being considered for selection. Shreyas Iyer recently captained Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, leading them to the IPL Final and scoring 604 runs in 17 matches. His last T20 appearance for India was in December 2023. Discussions have reportedly taken place regarding Shubman Gill’s inclusion, with options including dropping current openers or middle-order hitters, but none favored Gill’s selection. The current opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma, who have performed well, is likely to be retained. Replacing Tilak Varma was also considered but dismissed due to his consistent performances and high ICC T20I ranking. Replacing Gill with Yashasvi Jaiswal, a member of the 2024 T20 World Cup team, was also rejected.
