India Looks to Test Nabi’s Swing Ahead of New Zealand Tour

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is using Akib Nabi’s brief spell with Surrey as a live laboratory to gauge his swing capabilities in English weather. The 29‑year‑old quick, who was recently called up as a replacement for the injured Jasprit Bumrah during the Sri Lanka Test series, did not get a debut as India opted for a two‑bowler attack.

Nabi’s three‑match County Championship exposure – against Yorkshire, Sussex and Glamorgan – will allow selectors to monitor his line, length and ability to move the red ball under damp conditions. Such data is vital as India prepares for a Test series against New Zealand, where the locals expect conventional swing to play a decisive role.

The bowler’s recent domestic résumé includes a 60‑wicket haul that helped Jammu & Kashmir lift their maiden Ranji Trophy crown, a four‑in‑four burst in the 2025 Duleep Trophy, and a stint with Delhi Capitals in the IPL where he featured in five matches.

If the assessment goes well, Nabi is slated to return for the India A versus Australia A series beginning 22 September, providing another platform to demonstrate his progress.
