From Delhi to Chennai: Indian Cities Rise as International Sports Hubs

Metropolitan centres across India are rapidly transforming into magnets for world‑class sporting events. New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Goa, Guwahati, Rajgir, Patna, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow and Mahabalipuram have each hosted multiple international championships, ranging from athletics and hockey to surfing and para‑sports.

These venues have successfully accommodated world championships, Asian championships, world cups, ranking tournaments and continental qualifiers. The breadth of sports covered—athletics, hockey, badminton, shooting, boxing, table tennis, football, swimming, para‑sports, chess, cycling, fencing, volleyball, rugby and surfing—reflects the versatility of India’s infrastructure.

The Ministry’s data shows that more than 15 cities coordinated 36 events between January 2025 and June 2026, proving that logistical coordination and venue readiness have reached an advanced stage. Local athletes capitalised on home advantage, achieving notable milestones and setting new records.

Minister Mansukh Mandaviya noted that the exposure gained by officials, technical staff and volunteers during these tournaments is instrumental in building a robust sports ecosystem. The upcoming schedule of eleven events later this year, followed by the 19‑event portfolio for 2027‑2028, will further solidify the reputation of Indian cities as reliable hosts for global sports spectacles.
