The upcoming ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, commencing on September 30th, has been preceded by a surprising announcement from a veteran player of the Indian women’s cricket team. Gouher Sultana, a well-known spinner, has declared her retirement from international cricket. Sultana, who last played for the national team in 2014, has been away from the squad for the past 11 years.
Gouher Sultana made her ODI debut against Pakistan in May 2008. She took 66 wickets in 50 ODI matches with an average of 19.39. In this format, Gouher achieved four-wicket hauls three times. She also played 37 T20 matches for India, securing 29 wickets with an average of 26.27. Sultana participated in the Women’s Premier League, playing four matches but was unable to take any wickets.
Sultana shared an emotional post on Instagram to announce her retirement. In the post, she wrote, “Smiling and saying goodbye to cricket. After years of wearing the Indian jersey with pride and passion, the time has come for me to write the most emotional moment of my cricket journey. I announce my retirement from all formats of cricket. I have played top-level cricket for India and feel very honored. Thank you to all the teammates, coaches, selectors, and support staff.” She further stated, “Cricket will always be with me. However, my career as a player has ended, but the love for the game is more than ever. I am eager to contribute, inspire, guide, and serve the game in new ways. This is not a retirement. This is just the end of a golden chapter.”
