The Indian team for the Asia Cup 2025 is set to be finalized on August 19th in Mumbai. The selection meeting will be attended by captain Suryakumar Yadav, who is recovering from a sports hernia surgery, signaling his continued role as the team’s leader. A BCCI source confirmed the date and the subsequent press conference by chief selector Ajit Agarkar. Sources suggest that Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma are likely to be the preferred opening pair. Consequently, Shubman Gill’s place in the team is uncertain. Additionally, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer are also expected to be excluded from the T20 squad, with Jaiswal reportedly advised to concentrate on red-ball cricket. Gill’s potential vice-captaincy is also in doubt due to the presence of other top-order batsmen such as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma. Despite a strong performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup with 893 runs in 22 games, Gill’s position appears precarious. Jaiswal, who last played a T20I in July 2024, has been a key player in the Test squad, prompting the selectors to encourage his focus on Test cricket.
