The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 mini-auction, scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, will see intense bidding for remaining squad spots. However, the league will notably miss several prominent overseas players who have defined its success over the past decade. A combination of retirements, international duties, and personal decisions means that big names, long associated with the IPL, will not be participating.
This significant development will undoubtedly shape franchise strategies, especially for teams seeking impactful overseas all-rounders and top-order batsmen. The absence of these stars creates a considerable void.
Among those not heading to the auction block are: Glenn Maxwell (Punjab Kings), Andre Russell (Kolkata Knight Riders), Faf du Plessis (Delhi Capitals), and Ravichandran Ashwin (Chennai Super Kings).
Glenn Maxwell, the explosive Australian all-rounder, has been released by Punjab Kings and has confirmed he will not enter the IPL 2026 auction, effectively signaling the end of his IPL journey. His withdrawal, following similar announcements from Russell and du Plessis, significantly tightens the market for high-quality overseas all-rounders.
Andre Russell, a formidable force for Kolkata Knight Riders and a two-time IPL champion, has been released by the franchise and has announced his retirement from the IPL. While he won’t be playing, Russell will transition to a new role as KKR’s Power Coach for the upcoming season. His departure leaves a massive gap in KKR’s batting and bowling lineup.
Faf du Plessis, a former Chennai Super Kings star and previously with Delhi Capitals, will also be absent. Having been released by Delhi, he has opted to participate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), focusing on new league experiences at this stage of his career.
Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has already retired from the IPL earlier this year and will therefore not be available for the 2026 auction. Ashwin brought immense experience and tactical intelligence to various franchises throughout his IPL career.
