Khawaja's role with Brisbane Heat remains unclear as captaincy undecided

The latest contract extension for Osman Khawaja confirms his continued service with Brisbane Heat, but the specifics of his duties on the field have yet to be defined. The former Test player retired from international cricket after the Sydney Test in January and closed his first‑class career at the end of the Sheffield Shield campaign in March, yet he has chosen to stay active in the Big Bash League.

The Heat have not announced a captain for the season, leaving open the possibility that Khawaja could assume a leadership position under head coach James Hops. Hops, however, has only spoken about Khawaja’s class, composure and the value of his experience to the squad.

Khawaja expressed optimism about playing the whole competition, acknowledging that the season‑opening match on 15 December at the Gabba will feel “different” after a period of sporadic games aligned with national team commitments. He remains focused on contributing wherever the team needs him.

Khawaja’s previous BBL triumphs include titles with Sydney Thunder in 2015‑16 and Brisbane Heat in 2023‑24. In 124 T20 appearances, he has compiled three hundreds and 18 fifties, and he will join the team’s pre‑season preparation before the league commences.
