Malappuram has taken an unconventional route to celebrate the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 by transforming thousands of plastic bottles into an impressive public artwork. Positioned prominently on the Kunnummal divider, the installation features a striking bicycle kick scene that instantly grabs attention from passersby. The project was spearheaded by the municipal corporation with the twin goals of promoting cleanliness and embracing the global football fever. Chairperson V.T. Rinisha emphasized that the artwork is not just decorative but also educational, encouraging citizens to rethink waste disposal habits. The sculpture required meticulous planning and execution. Workers from the Haritha Karma Sena gathered over 6,000 bottles from across 40 wards, totaling nearly 80 kilograms in weight. These were combined with 73 kilograms of iron rods to create a sturdy frame. The entire structure was completed in just nine days at a cost of only ₹43,000. Residents and football lovers have praised the initiative, viewing it as both a tribute to the sport and a reminder of environmental responsibility. The municipality is also considering larger celebrations, including the development of a fun park dedicated to the World Cup. This installation joins an earlier football monument built between 2015 and 2020, reinforcing Malappuram’s identity as a football-passionate region committed to sustainable practices.
