Mandaviya Calls on Retired Athletes to Launch Sports Academies

New Delhi, August 4 – While handing out prize money to Commonwealth Games 2026 medallists, Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya delivered a clear message to athletes approaching the end of their competitive careers. He urged them to transform their experience into entrepreneurship by establishing sports academies.

"Do not view the Games merely as a route to a government job," the minister said. "After you retire, set up academies that can groom the next wave of champions." He linked this appeal to the newly launched ‘Khelo India’ scheme, which now enjoys a budget of ₹36,000 crore and promises continued investment in facilities, coaching and talent identification.

Mandaviya highlighted that the boxing team’s ten‑medal haul – seven gold and three silver – and the judo team’s four medals, including two historic golds, demonstrate the depth of Indian talent. The para‑athletics performers, too, proved that India can compete at the highest level across all categories.

The minister also reminded the athletes of the invaluable support from their coaches, insisting that gratitude and continued collaboration are essential for sustaining India’s sporting ascendancy. He concluded by encouraging the medal winners to aim for more gold at the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, using the confidence gained in Glasgow as a springboard.
