Mira Bai Chanu's 198 kg Total Secures Historic Silver for India

In Nagoja on September 23, Mira Bai Chanu lifted a combined 198 kg to win silver for India in the 49 kg weight class at the Asian Games 2026. Her successful snatch attempts of 83 kg, 85 kg and 87 kg set a strong foundation, while the clean‑and‑jerk saw her raise the bar to 107 kg and then 111 kg. The result ended a 28‑year medal drought that began after Karnam Malleswari’s 1998 bronze. Although Chanu fell short of gold, her performance underscored a resurgence in Indian weightlifting, complementing her previous Commonwealth gold and World Championship honors.
