Mustafizur Rahman joins Melbourne Renegades for BBL debut

Bangladesh’s renowned left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman is ready to step onto the BBL pitch for the first time. The Melbourne Renegades have officially added him to their roster for BBL16, bringing his celebrated swing bowling and deadly yorkers to the Australian franchise tournament.

The signing directly compensates for the season-ending injury to Jason Behrendorff. After the Australian fast bowler underwent shoulder surgery, the Renegades sought an elite wicket-taking option to revitalize their attack. Rahman’s arrival ticks that box perfectly.

Luke Ronchi, the team’s head coach, has placed high expectations on Rahman’s impact. He commended the Bangladeshi pacer for his consistent ability to produce breakthroughs at various stages of a T20 innings. Ronchi explained that Rahman’s knack for taking wickets in the powerplay and death overs mirrors exactly what the coaching staff desired from their pace attack. He also noted that supporters love bowlers who can single-handedly alter the course of a match within a single over, a defining characteristic of Rahman’s bowling repertoire.

The 31-year-old brings a vast portfolio of franchise cricket experience to Australia. Across 331 T20 matches globally, he has amassed 423 wickets. His career highlights include nine campaigns in the Bangladesh Premier League and eight editions of the IPL. He was instrumental in the Sunrisers Hyderabad title triumph in 2016, his inaugural season in the Indian league.

Rahman becomes the third international from Bangladesh to grace the BBL stage. The league has previously hosted Shakib Al Hasan, while current participant Rishad Hossim is representing the Hobart Hurricanes this year.

When asked about his anticipation for the BBL16 campaign, Rahman emphasized his excitement to represent the Renegades. He particularly looked forward to bowling at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, citing the stadium as a personal milestone and expressing his readiness to merge with the squad and contribute his tactical expertise.

There is a minor scheduling adjustment for the tournament start. Rahman will be unavailable for the season opener versus the Perth Scorchers in Chennai, as he is committed to the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20. He will, however, be fully available for all subsequent BBL16 matches once his ILT20 contract wraps up.
