Najmul Hossain Shanto has resigned as Bangladesh’s Test captain following the team’s defeat to Sri Lanka in the second and final Test match at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo. Sri Lanka won the series 1-0, with Bangladesh suffering an innings and 78-run loss in the final Test. Shanto announced his decision during the post-match press conference, stating that he was stepping down from the captaincy. He emphasized that his decision was made for the betterment of the team. In the decisive match, Bangladesh struggled with their batting, failing to replicate their performance from the first Test. They were bowled out for 247 in their first innings. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, built a commanding lead, with Pathum Nissanka scoring 158 runs. Sri Lanka’s spinners, led by Prabath Jayasuriya, then dismantled Bangladesh’s batting lineup in their second innings, securing the victory.
