Nicholas Pooran, a renowned T20 batsman, has been appointed as the captain of MI New York for the upcoming 2025 season of Major League Cricket (MLC). This announcement follows his recent retirement from international cricket with the West Indies. Pooran takes over leadership from Kieron Pollard, a veteran in the T20 format.
During his international career, Pooran played 167 matches across all formats for the West Indies, including a record 106 T20 Internationals. He concludes his international career as the team’s highest run-scorer in T20Is, with 2,275 runs. Pooran had previously made himself unavailable for the T20I series against England, opting for rest after a demanding IPL 2025 season with the Lucknow Super Giants. His 2024 performance was exceptional, setting a world record of 170 sixes in a calendar year. He continued this form into IPL 2025, scoring 524 runs at a strike rate of 196.25, including five half-centuries. His last appearance for the West Indies was in a T20I against Bangladesh in December 2024. He last played an ODI in July 2023 and did not participate in Test cricket for the Caribbean side.
