The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is facing significant upheaval just ahead of its next season, with the owner of the Multan Sultans announcing his departure. Ali Tareen, who has led the franchise for seven years, confirmed he will not renew his ownership, citing major disagreements with PSL management. This unexpected exit has put the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in a difficult position, as they now need to find not only a replacement for the Multan Sultans but also two additional owners for planned expansion teams. The league aims to grow to eight franchises for its 11th season, making Tareen’s departure a pressing issue.
Tareen expressed deep frustration with the current direction and management of the PSL, hinting at growing tensions with both league officials and other franchise owners. He emphasized his unwavering commitment to the Multan Sultans, even through consistent financial losses, stating the team’s importance transcended mere financial figures. “Being part of this team has been one of the greatest honours of my life. Despite the financial losses year on year, I never once thought about walking away. The Sultans have always meant more to me than just numbers. And I have always been willing to go as far as needed to protect it,” Tareen stated.
The Multan Sultans’ exit creates substantial pressure for the PCB. While all other existing franchises have confirmed their renewals, the league’s expansion plans are now in jeopardy. If a resolution with Tareen isn’t reached swiftly, the PCB will be compelled to secure three new franchise owners before the upcoming season. This situation arises after a year of visibly deteriorating relations between Tareen and the PSL management, marked by Tareen’s public criticisms regarding transparency and long-term strategy, which even led to a legal notice from the PCB. Despite these challenges, Tareen assured fans that the team belongs to South Punjab and urged them to continue their passionate support for whoever takes over next, promising to remain a fan himself.
