Quimsi Disuza’s Comeback Effort Not Enough Against Japan’s Yui Na Sakamoto

In Nagoya on September 20, the Asian Games women's singles table tennis bronze match featured a dramatic showdown between India's Quimsi Disuza and Japan's Yui Na Sakamoto.

Disuza, entering as the world’s seventh‑ranked player, slipped to a 3-6 deficit in the opening set. She clawed back in the second set, briefly taking a 11-10 lead before Sakamoto steadied herself, levelled the score and captured the set 12-11.

The third set saw Disuza surge ahead with a 6-3 lead and later 10-7, but the seasoned Japanese opponent employed smart variations and pressure tactics to neutralise the gap. After a tense 10-10 deadlock, Sakamoto seized the final rally, securing the bronze medal.

The match was punctuated by multiple edge‑ball calls, where points were replayed after the ball struck the table’s curved edge. Though Disuza missed out on a medal in singles, she still has a chance to stand on the podium in the mixed doubles event, partnering Mohammed Anas Imran Beg against Vietnam's Hoang Minh Tan Guyen and Trinh Nghi Trinh.
