Remembering Naren Tamhane – India's Early Test Wicket‑keeper

Naren Tamhane’s name remains etched in the early history of Indian Test cricket. Born on 4 August 1931 in Mumbai, he began his career as a bowler but was thrust into wicket‑keeping duties during a club match. His natural agility turned him into one of the country’s most dependable keepers. After debuting in first‑class cricket in 1951, he topped the 1952‑53 Rohinton Baria Trophy with 341 runs at 68.20. His performances secured a place in an unofficial Test against the Commonwealth Eleven and a Ranji Trophy debut. Tamhane earned his first official Test cap in 1955 against Pakistan in Dhaka, where he recorded five dismissals. Across 21 Tests he scored 225 runs, including a half‑century, and effected 35 catches and 16 stumpings. In 93 first‑class matches he amassed 1,459 runs, a century, five fifties, 174 catches and 79 stumpings. Comparisons with Australia’s Valerie Grout highlighted his skill. He passed away in 2022 at 71, remembered for his swift reflexes and pioneering role.
