Revised Khelo India Initiative Targets Schools, Colleges, and District Leagues
Secretary Hari Ranjan Rao explained that the concept of embedding sport in school curricula dates back decades, with many senior athletes recalling mandatory physical education during their school years. The government now intends to modernise that framework through a revamped Khelo India scheme.
The plan introduces a cascade of competitions – from primary schools to universities and district‑wide leagues – intended to knit together a larger cohort of athletes within a cohesive sporting ecosystem. By expanding the number of contests, the scheme hopes to keep youngsters actively engaged in sport and provide clear pathways for talent identification.
International table‑tennis champion G. Satyan praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s direct involvement with athletes, noting that the elevated respect for sportspersons is a direct result of governmental commitment. Satyan also observed that today’s youth are more daring, willing to experiment, and that parental guidance remains a critical factor in shaping their sporting journeys.
