The coastal city of Da Nang witnessed a strong Indian presence on day one of the Under-23 Asian Wrestling Championship. Competing in Greco-Roman style, Sagar Singh and Suraj both booked tickets to Sunday’s gold medal matches after impressive semifinal victories. Sagar’s campaign in the 67kg category was marked by calculated attacks and defensive solidity, allowing him to control the tempo against technically sound opponents. Suraj complemented the achievement by dominating the 60kg bracket with explosive bursts and quick transitions that left little room for counterplay. Although Kumar Sachin fought valiantly in the 77kg class, a narrow defeat in the semifinal ended his medal aspirations for now. In the 72kg and 82kg divisions, Indian wrestlers exited before the medal rounds, reflecting areas that require further tactical refinement. Federation chief Sanjay Singh congratulated the finalists and noted the elevated competition level at the venue. He stressed that the team’s preparation has been rigorous and that every athlete is committed to raising India’s standing in international wrestling. Attention now turns to qualification bouts scheduled for the following day, where three more Indian wrestlers will compete to extend the nation’s presence deeper into the bracket.
