New Delhi. The name of Shohli Akhtar of Bangladesh has been recorded in the pages of history. She became the first female cricketer to be banned by ICC for corruption. The 36 -year -old off -spinner has been suspended for five years after being found guilty of trying to fix the match during the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup.
Shoheli, who played two ODIs and 13 T20 matches for Bangladesh, admitted to violating five provisions of the ICC Anti -Corruption Code. She is accused of trying to corruption in matches during the tournament in South Africa, while at that time she was not part of the Bangladesh team.
ICC’s Anti -Corruption Unit (ACU) revealed the involvement of Shoheli through a conversation on Facebook Messenger, where it has a team partner of a team before Bangladesh’s match against Australia on 14 February 2023 – who appears as ‘Khiladi A’ I recognized – contacted.
He offered 2 million Bangladeshi Taka to his team partner to get out a hit wicket, claiming that the money would come from his ‘cousin’, which was involved in illegal betting.
Despite promising confidentiality and urging his team partner to erase his messages, the contacted player rejected the proposal and immediately reported the incident to ACU, providing voice notes as evidence.
Shoheli, who had erased his messages, finally admitted to violating Article 2.1.1, 2.1.3, 2.1.4, 2.4.4 and 2.4.7 of the ICC code. His ban, which has come into effect from 10 February 2025, is an important step in the cricket fight against corruption, which strengthens the importance of reporting and vigilance within the game.
