Shriya Akula’s Trailblazing Wins at WTT and Commonwealth Games

Shriya Akula’s journey from a Hyderabad household to the pinnacle of international table tennis exemplifies perseverance. Early guidance from her older sister Ravali sparked a lifelong passion for the sport.

After honing her skills at the Somnath Ghosh Academy, Akula balanced her sporting ambitions with academics, achieving a stellar 98.7% in her 12th‑grade board exams.

Her partnership with Sharath Kamal at the Commonwealth Games resulted in a gold medal in mixed doubles, catapulting her into worldwide recognition. The same year, she added two golds at the South Asian Games in the women’s doubles and team categories.

In 2024, Akula’s historic victory at the WTT Contender tournament in Lagos made her the first Indian to win a singles title at that level. She also clinched the women’s doubles crown alongside Archana Kamath.

The Indian government acknowledged her outstanding achievements with the Arjun Award in 2022, highlighting her influence on the nation’s sporting landscape.
