India’s Test captain Shubman Gill will miss the second Test against South Africa, beginning November 22 in Guwahati. Rishabh Pant, the designated vice-captain, is set to lead the team in this crucial Freedom Trophy 2025 match. Gill sustained a neck injury during the first innings in Kolkata, leaving the field after just three balls and requiring hospital evaluation. He did not return to bat and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of that match.
Further doubts loom over Gill’s availability for the subsequent ODI series. Team management is keen to avoid aggravating his condition, especially with a busy international schedule ahead. Resting Gill from the ODIs is a precautionary measure to ensure his full fitness for future assignments. If Gill cannot participate in Guwahati, Pant will continue his captaincy role as India aims to avert a series defeat. The team suffered a 30-run loss in the opening Test in Kolkata, being bowled out for 93 in their chase of 124.
Gill’s injury occurred on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test, after what seemed to be a whiplash motion while playing a shot. He was taken to the hospital for examination and remained under observation. While initial updates were positive, he was later seen wearing a neck brace at Kolkata airport, indicating restricted movement. The BCCI confirmed Gill would travel with the squad to Guwahati, with a final decision on his participation to be made closer to the match. Fast bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has joined the squad and could be a potential inclusion if Gill remains sidelined.
