Sri Lanka’s cricket team faces a significant squad alteration for the upcoming T20I tri-series in Pakistan, commencing November 18. Illness has sidelined key players, leading to last-minute changes just before the tournament begins in Rawalpindi. Captain Charith Asalanka and fast bowler Asitha Fernando have both been diagnosed with illness and will be returning home. This decision is a precautionary measure to allow them adequate rest and recovery for future commitments. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board confirmed these changes in a recent statement, emphasizing the players’ well-being.
Stepping into the leadership role is former captain Dasun Shanaka, who will now captain the T20I squad for this series. In another squad addition, uncapped batter Pavan Rathnayake, who recently debuted in ODIs against Pakistan, has been included in the T20I lineup. The team arrives in Pakistan looking to bounce back after a disappointing 3-0 ODI series defeat against the same opposition. This tri-series, also featuring Zimbabwe, is seen as crucial preparation for all participating nations ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next year.
