Sunil Chhetri’s Journey from Army Roots to International Glory
Born on 3 August 1984 in Secunderabad, Sunil Chhetri inherited a love for football from his parents—father K.B. Chhetri, an army serviceman and former player, and mother Sushila Nepal, a former national team member. The family’s military postings meant Chhetri attended multiple schools, yet his resolve to excel on the pitch never faltered.
His breakthrough arrived when he was selected for the Indian squad at the Asian School Championship in Kuala Lumpur while still in high school. He made his senior debut in 2005 and, two years later, scored four goals in a tournament that ended a 10‑year trophy drought for India.
The 2008 AFC Challenge Cup proved pivotal; Chhetri’s four‑goal haul, highlighted by a hat‑trick in the final, secured the championship and earned him the moniker “poster boy” of Indian football.
In the 2011 SAFF Championship, Chhetri shattered the season goal record with seven strikes, leading India to the title and receiving the Player of the Tournament award. He captained the side in the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers and steered the team to another Nehru Cup triumph.
Domestically, Chhetri represented JCT, East Bengal and Dempo for nearly eight years, drawing interest from abroad. A 2007 trial with Coventry City and a contract with Queens Park Rangers were halted by work‑permit issues, but he signed with the Kansas City Wizards in 2010, becoming the third Indian to play for a foreign club.
He later joined Bengaluru FC in 2012 and became the most expensive Indian player when the Indian Super League launched in 2015. His influence helped Mumbai City FC reach the playoffs in 2016.
Celebrating his 100th cap at the 2018 Intercontinental Cup, Chhetri also surpassed Lionel Messi’s record of 64 international goals. He has been honoured as AIFF Player of the Year seven times, received the Arjuna Award (2011), Padma Shri (2019) and the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (2021).
