Supreme Court to Review Vinesh Phogat Trial Participation Case

India’s top court is set to examine whether wrestler Vinesh Phogat can compete in upcoming selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games after the Wrestling Federation of India filed an appeal against the Delhi High Court’s May 22 order. The high court had ruled that the federation could not exclude Phogat under its current policy simply because she is returning from maternity leave, describing her as an iconic athlete deserving special consideration. The federation’s petition will be heard on Friday by Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe. The high court had also mandated video recording of the May 30-31 trials and required independent observers from the Sports Authority of India and Indian Olympic Association to ensure transparency. Additionally, the court had reprimanded the federation for sending Phogat a notice that linked her Paris Olympics exit to national shame. Although federation insiders initially suggested they would respect the high court verdict, the appeal indicates a shift in stance. Concerns have been raised about team logistics, as the athlete roster was already sent to Japan earlier this month. The federation further clarified that any inclusion would confine Phogat to the 50 kg weight class. Friday’s hearing is expected to clarify the legal path forward for one of India’s most celebrated wrestlers.
