Tanvi Patri’s back‑to‑back continental wins highlight India's rising badminton talent

The Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Chengdu concluded with a familiar name on the top step of the podium – Tanvi Patri. The 15‑year‑old from Odisha clinched the Under‑17 girls’ singles title, defeating Shaina Manimuthu 11‑15, 15‑10, 15‑12.

Patri’s victory marks her second continental crown in quick succession, following her 2024 Under‑15 Asian title. Her resume this season already includes a maiden international triumph at the Pontianak International Challenge and an All‑India Under‑19 ranking tournament win in Bangalore.

Seeded second, Patri’s path was anything but easy. She opened with a three‑game battle against China’s Zhou Jing Li, edging it 18‑16, 12‑15, 15‑13. The Indian then dispatched Japan’s Shizuku Kashio in straight games before overwhelming Lin Heng Men 15‑8, 15‑8 in the quarters.

In the semis, she held her nerve against China’s Yu Ying Gui, securing a 15‑9, 11‑15, 15‑11 win. The all‑Indian final showcased the strength of India’s junior pipeline, with Shaina having earned a silver medal after her own Under‑15 Asian success.

The Indian squad also added a bronze in boys’ doubles, as Aditya Singh Nagi and Tannmay Verma fell to the Taiwanese duo Bo Lin Ho and Jui En Ho in the semi‑finals. Patri’s consistent performances signal a bright future for Indian badminton on the global stage.
