Taraial semi‑final draw controversy over AMMA weight rule

Nagoya, 21 September – India’s Supriya Taraial faced a puzzling semi‑final outcome in the Asian Games mixed‑martial‑arts event. Coach Nikhil Kundr explained that the match was first ruled a loss, then overturned to a draw after an arbitration review.

The arbitration panel, composed of three judges, re‑scored the fight and found no decisive winner. With the result declared a draw, the AMMA rulebook offers two pathways: a counter‑arbitration request or a decision based on the competitors’ body weight.

Singapore elected the weight‑based method. Taraial weighed 700 grams more than Hoon Teo, and under the rule the lighter athlete was declared the victor. Kundr criticized the process, saying the weight advantage did not mirror Taraial’s superior technique and point tally during the bout.

Despite the semi‑final disappointment, Taraial’s bronze represents a historic first for India in MMA at the Asian Games. The 36‑year‑old, a veteran of judo, kurash and fighting‑jiu‑jitsu, had earlier defeated Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baiglam 2‑0 to reach the last four.
