The cricket rivalry between India and Pakistan is marked by a rich history of intense matches, often filled with controversies, high stakes, and thrilling moments. For decades, encounters between these two teams have ignited immense excitement and anticipation among fans. Not only in India and Pakistan but also across the globe, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await these clashes. Stadiums are usually packed, and viewers remain glued to their televisions. However, one particular match between India and Pakistan stands out, having been witnessed by only 750 spectators.
If this figure seems surprising and hard to believe, the reaction is understandable. It wasn’t a match affected by any pandemic-related restrictions. It was played during a time when no such limitations existed. Despite the presence of prominent players from both India and Pakistan, the attendance was remarkably low.
This match was held 29 years ago, on September 16, 1996. It was a special occasion because it was the first One Day International (ODI) match held in Canada, a country with a relatively limited connection to cricket. The match wasn’t placed there by chance; it was organized with the large diaspora populations from both countries in mind. Unfortunately, the event disappointed, with only around 750 people attending the game at the Toronto stadium.
The precise reasons for the low turnout remain unclear, but rain in Toronto that day may have played a role. The match was shortened to 33 overs per side due to the weather conditions. During this era, Sachin Tendulkar, the ‘Master Blaster,’ was at the peak of his dominance in Indian and international cricket. His brilliance was once again on display in this match. Pakistan batted first and scored 170 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Saeed Anwar, the opener, scored 46 runs off 34 balls. Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble each took three wickets for India. In response, Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten innings of 89 runs off 89 balls guided India to victory, reaching the target in 29.5 overs with 8 wickets to spare.
