The Unfulfilled Dream of Rajinder Goyal, Ranji’s Record Bowler

Rajinder Goyal entered the world on 20 September 1942 in Narwana, Haryana. A left‑arm orthodox spinner, he earned his first‑class debut for Haryana in the 1958‑59 season after dominating local competitions.

His career spanned 26 years, ending in 1985, during which he amassed 750 wickets in 157 matches. The Ranji Trophy was his arena of excellence, where he claimed 637 wickets – a record that still tops the leaderboard after more than four decades.

Goyal’s repertoire included 18 ten‑wicket match hauls and 59 five‑wicket innings, underscoring his consistency and match‑winning potential.

Despite these achievements, he never received a call‑up to the Indian national team. He passed away on 21 June 2020 in Rohtak at the age of 77, remembered as one of the most successful yet unselected cricketers in Indian domestic history.
