The Indian team for the 2025 Asia Cup has not been announced yet. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 9th, featuring eight teams. Prior to the team selection, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, the 1983 World Cup winner and former Indian opening batsman, has shared his opinion on the Asia Cup 2025. He revealed his preferred opening pair for the Asia Cup, which does not include Sanju Samson.
Krishnamachari Srikkanth has backed young stars Abhishek Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, and Sai Sudarshan as India’s opening pair. He advised against including Sanju Samson in the opening role. Srikkanth’s statement has become a topic of discussion in the cricket world. On his YouTube channel, ‘Chikki Chika,’ Srikkanth mentioned that Abhishek Sharma is his first choice and should definitely be selected as an opening batsman. For his partner, Srikkanth suggested choosing one from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudarshan, or Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
Krishnamachari Srikkanth has not considered Sanju Samson as a contender for opening, especially since Samson was found to be weak against short balls in the T20 series against England. Srikkanth said on his YouTube channel ‘Chikki Chika’, ‘Sanju Samson did not do anything special against the short ball against England. According to me, it is difficult for him to open. If I were a selector, Abhishek Sharma would be my first choice. For the second choice, I would choose one of Vaibhav Suryavanshi or Sai Sudarshan.’
Krishnamachari Srikkanth said about Vaibhav Suryavanshi, ‘I will include Vaibhav Suryavanshi in my 15-member team as well. He is playing brilliantly. Sai Sudarshan is the Orange Cap holder. He and Yashasvi Jaiswal are performing very well. Therefore, one of Sudarshan, Suryavanshi, or Jaiswal should start the innings with Abhishek. This would be my preference. One of Samson and Jitesh Sharma can be chosen as the wicketkeeper-batsman.’
