Village Rejoices as Sakshi Sharma Brings Home Commonwealth Gold

A wave of celebration has swept through a village in Jind district of Haryana after Sakshi Sharma helped the Indian women's kabaddi team win gold at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.

In the final, the Indian side overcame Uganda to take the top prize. Sakshi, a native of Jind, was among the players who contributed to the title-winning campaign, and her home and village are now filled with pride and joy.

Sakshi's grandmother, Murti Devi, said she was extremely happy. She recalled that her granddaughter had dreamed of playing kabaddi from childhood. The family watched the match and the whole village followed it as well. Murti Devi said that residents had repeatedly remarked that the girl had brought fame to the entire village and should aim even higher. Sakshi is the daughter of Murti Devi's elder son, and she has two sisters and one brother.

Murti Devi said that Sakshi likes to eat almost everything. She added that she planned to welcome her granddaughter warmly with milk and curd when she returns.

Her mother, Kavita Devi, said she felt great pleasure. She said a big screen had been placed in the village, allowing residents to sit together and watch the game. She said everyone was happy that their daughter had brought back a medal for the country, adding that Sakshi had made both the village and the nation proud. Kavita Devi emphasised that daughters are equal to sons and expressed the wish that every family could be blessed with such a child. She said she had sent Sakshi off with churma, as the young athlete loves milk, ghee and churma.

Kavita Devi said Sakshi had always been passionate about kabaddi and wanted to make her mark in the sport. She hoped her daughter would one day reach the Olympic level, saying this was not just her dream but the dream of the entire village. She noted that Sakshi had received cooperation from both her household and the community. The family plans to distribute laddoos on her arrival and to cook whatever food she wishes to eat.

Sakshi's father, Churiya Ram, said his daughter had raised his name, the village's name, the name of Jind district, Haryana and finally the country. He said he wanted nothing more and hoped she would work even harder and progress further.
