After much anticipation, Aaryavir Sehwag, the son of former Indian cricket legend Virender Sehwag, made his debut in the Delhi Premier League (DPL). This marked Aaryavir’s first appearance in any league. He seized the opportunity, displaying the aggressive batting style reminiscent of his father’s career. This performance seemed to reflect the impact of advice received from his father, as revealed by Aaryavir after the match.
In the DPL 2025, 17-year-old Aaryavir Sehwag began his career playing for Central Delhi Kings. He opened for the team in the match against East Delhi Riders. Those who have watched Virender Sehwag play are familiar with his attacking approach from the start of his innings. Aaryavir showcased a similar approach.
Aaryavir commenced by scoring one run in his first over, subsequently hitting two consecutive boundaries off the fast bowler Navdeep Saini. The young batsman then struck two more boundaries off a spinner. The right-handed batsman made an impression in his first match. Although he couldn’t play a long innings, his score of 22 runs off 16 balls demonstrated his explosive batting capabilities, similar to his father, and his ability to take on any bowler.
After the match, when Aaryavir was asked about his conversation with his father before his debut, he mentioned the three key pieces of advice Sehwag had given him, which Sehwag himself had followed throughout his career. Aaryavir stated, “Not much was discussed with dad, he just told me to play freely, not to overthink, and to play my shots.”
Aaryavir demonstrated his ability to apply his father’s advice on the field, and his performance in a short innings showed his potential. Aaryavir replaced Yash Dhull in the match, who had been consistently scoring runs for the team, but had to leave the tournament mid-way due to his selection in the Duleep Trophy. Central Delhi Kings are now set to play in Qualifier-1, and based on Aaryavir’s performance in the first match, he is likely to get another opportunity in this crucial game.
