Chief Minister Shri Bhupesh Baghel completed the ritual of tying paddy skirts at the door of his residence on Dhanteras today as per the cultural tradition of Deepawali in Chhattisgarh. During Deepawali, when the new crop is ripe and ready in the fields, the villagers prepare artistic skirts with soft earrings of paddy. By decorating the houses with them, they thank Goddess Lakshmi for her happiness and prosperity and invite her to worship. It is a folk belief that this invitation of her reaches the Goddess through the birds, which descend on the courtyard and the doorway to pick up the grains of paddy. In this way the folk culture of the state shares its happiness with nature and saves it. In Chhattisgarh, from Bastar to Surguja, there is a tradition of hanging paddy skirts on the courtyard and door of the house. Which is also called Pahta or Cage.
