Chief Minister Shri Bhupesh Baghel has paid homage to Minimata, the first woman MP of Chhattisgarh, on her death anniversary on August 11. The Chief Minister has said that Minimata, who has a simple and easy-going personality, has dedicated her entire life for the service of mankind. Born in Assam, Minimata got engrossed in the life of Chhattisgarh after her marriage. To protect the civil rights of Dalits, he played an important role in getting the Prevention of Untouchability Act passed in the Parliament. In protest against child marriage and dowry system, he raised his voice from society to Parliament. Minimata was also aware and supportive of labor interests and women’s education. He also did remarkable work in the direction of providing employment and industrial training opportunities to the local residents at Bhilai Steel Plant. Mr. Baghel said that Minimata has given a new height to female identity. In her memory, the Government of Chhattisgarh has changed the name of Sister Prasuti Sahayata Yojna to ‘Minimata Mahtari Jatan Yojna’, which provides financial assistance for maternity to labor women belonging to weaker income group of unorganized sectors. State level award is given in the name of Minimata for her outstanding contribution in the field of upliftment of society and women. The Hasdeo Bango Dam in the state is known as Minimata.
