Jhum cultivation was done in the tribal areas. The bushes were cleared by fire and cultivated land was prepared. The whole process was painstaking but also a symbol of celebration as farming provided the opportunity for livelihood. The National Tribal Dance Festival brought alive the preparations for jhum cultivation by the artists of Manipur through Kharimkhara dance. It is also called Dance of Livelihood. The dance showed how land useful for cultivation was marked, then prepared and seeds were planted. The whole process was presented by the folk artists of Manipur with a beautiful dance called Kharimkhara. He is a resident of Khukhrai district. The special feature of the dance is that the ornaments worn around the knee emit a rhythmic melody. The more precise the steps are, the more precise is the melody coming out of the ornament. Kharimkhara dance is a celebration of agricultural culture and the wonderful enthusiasm of preparing the land through their labor is also reflected in it which becomes even more attractive in the dance form.
