The fragrance of Chhattisgarh Devbhog, an improved variety of paddy developed by Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, will also be felt in Ayodhya and adjoining areas of Uttar Pradesh. In the presence of the Vice Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, it was decided to provide 120 quintals of Devbhog paddy seeds to Purari Seeds by the Agricultural University under the earlier agreement between the Agricultural University and Purari Seeds Company, Ayodhya, here today. These seeds will be planted in 1200 acres of fields in Ayodhya and adjoining areas. On this occasion Director Research and Sector Dr. P.L. Chandrakar, Co-Director Research Dr. Vivek Tripathi and Field Manager Dr. HL. Sonboir was also present. Director Research Dr. P.L. Chandrakar assured the operators of Purari Seeds Company of providing all possible support along with the technology of production of Chhattisgarh Devbhag paddy. Director of Purari Seeds Company, Shri Ram Gopal Tiwari told on this occasion that being impressed by the new varieties of crops developed by Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, he has decided to plant Chhattisgarh Devbhog variety in Ayodhya and nearby 1200 acres area. The seeds purchased from the university will be distributed to the farmers for crop production. He told that he has also discussed with the officials of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas regarding the use of Devbhog rice for the enjoyment of Shri Ram Lalla. It is noteworthy that by the hybridization of Swarna and Jeerashankar varieties of paddy, an improved variety Chhattisgarh Devbhog has been developed by the scientists of Indira Gandhi Agricultural University. This medium duration (135 to 140 days) variety is tolerant to diseases like brown spot, sheathrot, tungro etc. Its grains are of medium fine size and the grain recovery is 67 percent. Its grains contain a good amount of amylose (24.5 percent) with a mild aroma, due to which the rice is very soft after cooking. The average yield of this variety is 40 to 45 quintals per hectare.
