When Teesha, growing up with only 15 percent hearing ability, called her mother for the first time after 5 years of birth, her parents’ eyes lit up with happiness. For them it was a miracle, which was possible only due to the efforts of the government. Seeing Teesha speaking, there was hope in the mind of Mr. Jitendra Kumar Kannoje, the father of deaf and mute Pankaj living in the nearby village. Pankaj also got the help of the government and he heard his voice for the first time in 7 years. Five-year-old Teesha Koma and seven-year-old Pankaj Kannauje of Daundi Lohara area of Balod district could not hear or speak since childhood. On getting information about Teesha, the social worker of the area, Ms. Neelima Shyam, she came to meet the Minister of Women and Child Development, Mrs. Anila Bhendia with Teesha’s mother Mrs. Minister Smt. Bhendia made arrangements for his treatment at the Medical College Hospital with sensitivity. The investigation revealed that Teesha has no hearing ability in 85 percent of her ears. A hearing machine from the hospital was installed in Teesha’s ears. By putting a machine in the ear, gradually hearing the crackling sound, he started responding and started speaking within three months of the treatment. Teesha’s mother told that even after being three-four years old, Teesha did not speak nor did she give any reaction to the voice, due to which she used to worry. Due to limited income due to livelihood and wages, he could not even get expensive treatment, in such a situation, government help came as a boon for his child. Expressing gratitude to the state government, he was happy and told that Teesha has now started telling letters along with speaking mother-father, counting, pomegranate, mango. Told. Mrs. Bhendia also arranged for Pankaj’s treatment in Mekahara. Investigation revealed that Pankaj has very little hearing and needs long speech therapy. Hearing devices were given to both the children by the Social Welfare Department on the instructions of Mrs. Bhendia. Mrs. Bhendia gave chocolates, sweets and biscuits to the children with her own hands, which brought joy to the children’s faces. When audiologist and speechtherapist Mr. Dev Mishra put a hearing device on Pankaj at Mrs. Bhendia’s residence and he heard his voice for the first time in life, his parents are also optimistic about Pankaj’s future. Teesha and Pankaj’s parents On consent, Minister Smt. Bhendia has made arrangements for treatment, speech therapy, accommodation, food and education of children in the Institute of Social Welfare Department. Smt. Bhendia said that with proper treatment and education, children will not be dependent on anyone in future and will be able to stand on their own feet.
