Geoffrey Hinton, a former Google executive and widely recognized as the ‘Godfather of AI,’ has issued a stark warning about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence. He believes that AI could pose an existential threat to humanity in the future. Hinton suggests that those developing the technology, whom he refers to as ‘tech bros,’ are heading in the wrong direction. In an interview with CNN, the Nobel Prize-winning computer scientist estimated a 10-20% probability of AI leading to the extinction of humans. He also expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of current efforts by companies to ensure AI remains subservient to humans, asserting that this approach is unlikely to succeed. Hinton made these comments at the Ai4 industry conference in Las Vegas, emphasizing that AI will surpass human intelligence and develop methods to overcome control measures.
