At WWDC 2025, Apple unveiled significant enhancements for AirPods, extending their functionality beyond mere audio playback. With the iOS 26 update, AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, and AirPods Pro 2 are equipped with new features designed for content creation, communication, and remote camera control.
Announced on June 9 during the WWDC 2025 keynote, these updates will be compatible across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The new features include studio-quality voice recording, remote camera control, and improved call clarity, leveraging Voice Isolation technology.
For creators, the update introduces ‘studio-quality audio recording’ to AirPods. Using the H2 chip, beamforming microphones, and Apple’s audio technology, the updated AirPods aim to provide enhanced voice clarity, even in noisy environments. This feature will function in apps like Voice Memos, FaceTime, Messages dictation, and third-party camera and video conferencing apps, including Webex. It also supports CallKit, allowing many calling apps to benefit from cleaner audio output.
Another key update enables users to use their AirPods as a remote control for their iPhone or iPad’s camera. By pressing and holding the stem of the AirPods within the Camera app or any compatible app, users can start and stop video recordings or capture photos. This feature offers convenience for individuals filming themselves without the need to constantly move back and forth to control the camera.
The updates are currently available for developers via the Apple Developer Program and will roll out to the public next month under the Apple Beta Software Program. Apple plans a free firmware update this fall, requiring iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS Tahoe 26. Some features may have regional limitations, and support might vary based on local laws and languages. Overall, the updates reflect Apple’s effort to transform AirPods into versatile multi-use devices, moving beyond simple audio accessories.
