August Records Show 4 Lakh Passenger Cars Sold, Led by Non‑Petrol Models

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations released August data showing that passenger‑vehicle retail crossed the 4‑lakh mark, reaching 4,02,398 units – a 16% surge over the previous year. More importantly, CNG, hybrid and electric cars together claimed a 41.95% share of the market, pushing petrol‑powered cars down to 40.85% for the first time.

Overall vehicle sales climbed to a record 24,23,201 units, up 17.51% year‑on‑year. Every segment, from two‑wheelers to commercial trucks, posted new highs. While the year‑over‑year jump appears strong, FADA cautioned it is aided by a weak August 2025 base, where buyers postponed purchases anticipating GST 2.0 reductions.

Looking ahead, the association expects the real test of demand to come between September and November. Chairman Sai Giridhar pointed to festive season buying, post‑monsoon rural demand and disciplined inventory levels as the primary drivers for continued growth.
