Government Plans Autonomous Research Hub under Anna University

Tamil Nadu’s Higher Education Department is moving forward with a plan to create a specialised university dedicated to emerging technologies, including AI, quantum computing, biotech, climate tech and space research. The institution, tentatively named the Periyar Institute of Emerging Technology, will start as an autonomous institute linked to Anna University. Officials are preparing an exhaustive project report that will cover curriculum design, campus infrastructure, research agendas, funding models and international partnership frameworks. The inaugural academic term is slated to begin within five months, with a longer‑term aim of transforming the institute into a stand‑alone university granted degree‑conferring powers and the ability to conduct applied research.

Strategic partnerships with premier Indian and foreign universities, research labs and industry giants are central to the initiative. Anna University will coordinate early collaborations and develop bespoke degree programmes aligned with the latest technological advancements. The institute’s mission is to generate a talent pool of highly qualified graduates and scholars ready to contribute to fast‑evolving scientific and industrial domains. Coursework will be complemented by research projects, product development initiatives and industry‑focused applications.

The department is also drafting legislation to set up an excellence centre for basic sciences. The proposed law is expected to be introduced in the current academic year. Modeled after the Indian Institute of Science, the envisioned science institute will have the authority to award degrees and will concentrate on postgraduate, doctoral and post‑doctoral research in physics, chemistry, mathematics and computational biology.
