BBC Report Triggers Investigation into Instagram Promotion of CSAM in India

The BBC World Service’s report sparked alarm by alleging that paid promotions on Instagram were directing users to channels that distributed child sexual abuse material (CSAM). The investigation noted that the ads were flagged by the platform’s own algorithms but were still allowed to run, raising questions about the effectiveness of Instagram’s content‑filtering mechanisms. The NCPCR has now taken up the matter, demanding detailed answers from Meta and promising a comprehensive fact‑finding mission that will scrutinise the platform’s compliance with Indian law and its internal safeguards against CSAM.
