Border Communities to Receive Roads, Power, Digital Access in New Govt Scheme

A landmark development initiative, the Vibrant Villages Programme, was launched to bridge the development gap faced by villages that lie along India’s 15,000‑kilometre land frontier. With a budget of ₹11,639 crore, the plan will upgrade more than 2,600 border hamlets by constructing all‑season roads, extending electricity grids, installing telecom towers, and setting up health and education facilities.

The scheme also prioritises digital connectivity, ensuring that residents can access online services, e‑learning platforms, and market information. By integrating these villages into the national development framework, the government aims to strengthen the socio‑economic fabric of frontier regions and reinforce their role in the country’s security architecture.

Implementation will be carried out in two distinct phases. VVP‑1, a centrally sponsored project executed with state partners, focuses on the northern border, while VVP‑2, a wholly central scheme, addresses villages along the remaining international boundaries.
